Viewing Leadership
and Ministry through
the Lens of a Shepherd

“Because we are not God, because we are finite, not infinite, we cannot know everything at a glance, and therefore our knowledge is limited to one perspective or another.”
John Frame, “A Primer on Perspectivalism”

Through 25 years of pastoral ministry, during which I experienced a significant burnout, I have seen the need church leaders have for individual care, and that churches have for help when walking through difficult relational situations.

In an effort to help meet these needs, I offer the shepherding perspective: consulting, care, and training for ministry leaders and local churches.

Consulting
It’s difficult for churches to find trusted help in walking through challenging shepherding situations. I have extensive experience with an array of hard issues. I’ve made mistakes and learned painful lessons. I’ve also worked with-and been trained by-industry leaders like GRACE and Called to Peace, and know when to refer your church to expert organizations like these.

Care
Through 25 years of pastoral ministry, I have spent thousands of hours providing shepherding care to countless people. My passion is serving ministry leaders, though I’m honored to meet with anyone who desires help and guidance. What’s unique about me are my pastoral experience and my approach of providing a proposed roadmap for our journey together.

I prefer to use the word “counseling” to describe the work done by licensed therapists and am not trained to provide therapeutic care for addiction or trauma, or to diagnose or treat mental health disorders. I do have an established relational network with dozens of local counselors, and will be glad to refer if necessary.

My Story

My name is Abe Meysenburg. I was born in Lincoln, Nebraska, to two ex-hippies who had trusted in Jesus only a few years before. Jesus saved me when I was only four. My dad went on to become a pastor for several years in Pennsylvania before our family moved back to Nebraska as I was beginning high school. I went to Moody Bible Institute, where I met my wife, Jenn, and began serving the church as a pastor. Jenn and I soon moved to Tacoma, Washington, where we planted a church and had our four children. Church planting was humbling, and I now realize I planted in order to gain an identity, not because I already had the identity of a beloved son of the Father. Six years after planting, we merged with another church where I served for 11 years.

In 2015, I experienced a significant burnout. I had unhealthy relational patterns that were showing up in my family and ministry which were connected to parts of my story. Since then, I have spent a lot of time with skilled counselors and shepherds who have helped me live more from my true self in Christ (Eph. 4:24). In 2018, we moved to Alabama to join a large church staff. I have faced many long days of ministry pain, and yet still I love the church of Jesus more than ever! I enjoy using my gifts of leadership, shepherding, and teaching to serve leaders, to walk with people through their story, to equip followers of Jesus for ministry, and to learn together to experience the Holy Spirit’s intimate presence.
